Background
The prophet Nathan was sent to King David to express God’s anger. He used a metaphor that angered David, who believed someone else was to blame. When Nathan revealed that David was the guilty party, David admitted his sins.
2 Samuel 12: 7
Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
Submission To God
David is often called “a man after God’s heart.” Yet his reign had been marred. David impregnated Bathsheba and got Uriah (her husband) killed in a war against the Ammonites. Many believe these actions should have led to David losing God’s favor. However, what stands out is David’s sincere remorse and his willingness to confront his failings. He didn’t shy away from taking full responsibility for his actions, avoiding any attempts at self-justification. David had a history of many triumphs and trials. However, his profound love for God and his heartfelt submission truly shone through during this vulnerable time.
Accountability in Stewardship
Nathan spoke in metaphors, gently guiding David towards a painful truth. The truth penetrated David’s defences allowing him to recognize the injustice faced by an innocent man who had been wronged. Consequently, David felt the weight of the injustice, understandably furious and yearned for justice on behalf of the victim. As king, he held the power to bring healing and rectify the wrongs Nathan highlighted. However, Nathan courageously pointed out David’s involvement. The revelation revealed the depth of the king’s heart and his struggle to confront his actions.
