If you are unsure what to look for in others or build in yourself, look for depth. It is the quality that separates the foolish from the wise. The shallow scratch the surface, proclaiming they have seen and know it all. In contrast, the profound are intimate with knowledge. Even when they have understood in all the ways they can imagine, they know their imagination has limitations. As does their understanding of knowledge. So, they love the truth in knowledge and accept the hidden. Knowing that knowledge will reveal itself if she finds them worthy, as their understanding of themselves deepens and their imagination widens.
Therefore, a person who believes in himself will conquer nothing, not even themself. They remain superficial, knowing nothing of themself or the world. They believe in nothing and change nothing of consequence. A person who has not put work into themselves is a danger to themselves and the world. Their confidence is but misplaced arrogance. They face uncertainty with fear, suspicion, and brute force. Such an approach fails to coax truth and knowledge to dance with them. Instead, wisdom burrows deeper into hiding.
While people of depth believe in what they have put in themselves and know what they lack, they change the world by changing themselves. They are confident, believing they can conquer their world because they have conquered themselves. When they fall short, they need only dig deeper and embrace the God of infinite wisdom. In these people, uncertainty is an opportunity for discovery and transformation.
