Description

The National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) is a standardized test that individuals in the United States must pass in order to obtain a license as a practical or vocational nurse. Practical nurses, also known as licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in some states, play an important role in the healthcare system by providing basic nursing care to patients under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians.

The NCLEX-PN is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and is designed to assess the knowledge and skills required for entry-level practical nursing practice. This examination ensures that candidates have the necessary competencies to safely and effectively care for patients.

The NCLEX-PN exam covers a wide range of nursing topics, including:

  1. Safe and Effective Care Environment: This section assesses a candidate’s knowledge of safety and infection control, ethical and legal issues, and the nurse’s role in healthcare settings.

  2. Health Promotion and Maintenance: It includes questions related to growth and development, nutrition, and preventive care.

  3. Psychosocial Integrity: This section examines the candidate’s understanding of mental health and the nurse’s role in providing emotional and psychological support to patients.

  4. Physiological Integrity: This category covers various aspects of physiological health, including basic care and comfort, pharmacological therapies, reduction of risk potential, and physiological adaptation.

The NCLEX-PN is a computer-adaptive test, meaning that the difficulty of the questions is adjusted based on the test-taker’s responses. The exam is designed to determine if a candidate has the minimum level of competency to practice safely and effectively as a practical nurse.

Passing the NCLEX-PN is a critical step in the process of becoming a licensed practical nurse in the United States, and it is typically required by state nursing boards for licensure. The specific requirements and passing standards may vary from one state to another, so candidates should check with their state nursing board for the most up-to-date information regarding licensure and the NCLEX-PN.

NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is a nationwide examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States and Canada since 1994 and 2015, respectively. There are two types, the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN. After graduation from a school of nursing, one takes the NCLEX exam to receive his or her nursing license. A nursing license gives an individual the permission to practice nursing, granted by the state where he or she met the requirements.

NCLEX examinations are developed and owned by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN). The NCSBN administers these examinations on behalf of its member boards which consist of the boards of nursing in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. territories, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands.

To ensure public protection, each board of nursing requires a candidate for licensure to pass the appropriate NCLEX examination, NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN for vocational or practical nurses. NCLEX examinations are designed to test the knowledge, skills and abilities essential for the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry-level.
