Education has come under attack from so many angles. Many believe Africa must change the nature of our education to manifest its benefits. Unfortunately, few understand what education is all about. If one does not understand the purpose of something, they are not likely to utilize it correctly. Education adds to the character and nature of a man/ woman. It does not create a new person from scratch. Remember that character is who you are, and reputation is who people think you are. People are easily deceived and driven by many agendas. So, pick character over reputation. Do not pretend to be something you are not. Pretence usually leads to internal conflict, even when seeking education.
Does education fix personal failings?
If a person is lazy and crooked, he will look for ways to learn to cheat the system. They will find a way to manipulate the system to get ahead without understanding the core values of education. On the other hand, a person who wants to use knowledge to improve his life will use the same education to build his character, fortitude and make an honest living. In other words, education is an open check every individual fills in and withdrawals. Unfortunately, our culture fails to emphasize personal responsibility, which is necessary when seeking a life of privilege.
Is education the source of purpose?
A purposeless person will spend years obtaining education and titles but functions like someone who never stepped into the classroom. Such a person has no specific destination or measures to determine whether they are on the right path. Instead, they escort others to achieve their destiny. Education is not at fault, but the lack of character and purpose in people. For this reason, I ask you who you are and what you want from life when you come for mentorship. Giving directions to someone without knowing their journey and intended destination is pretentious. We are born alone and die alone; life is not something another person can do on our behalf.
How can we make education work for us?
Believe in something greater than yourself. Your centre will become a campus to orient you when you lose your way or face tough decisions. Many think only of themselves to the point where families, society, integrity, institutions and even countries are sacrificed to benefit a few individuals. It is possible to grow as an individual without bringing down others to rise. Pulling down others seldom results in growth. One is stagnant by pulling people under their feet to feel superior. Life is not a contest. You have your own race, and others have theirs. There is no prize for spectators of other people’s lives. Be the best version of yourself; that is your prize. Be happy with every small step you make towards your finish line. Gratitude in all seasons is a fantastic gift to develop.
