A Deceptive Downturn
The demanding work had become a welcome distraction from the worsening situation on the farm. But another blow soon followed. Mrs Bernette informed David that more of his land was drying up, and even the wells were failing. He wondered what good it would do to return to the farm managers if nothing could be changed. Determined, he resolved to work harder, save more, and reinvest in the farmโs future.
Then came an unexpected call from Mrs Bernette, her voice urgent. Reluctantly, he returned to the office. Her sombre expression told him everything before she spoke. With regret, she explained that the company was downsizing. He would receive three monthsโ notice, but his accumulated leave meant he didnโt need to serve it.
The news stunned him. His hopes for promotion evaporated instantly. Without his job, how could he ever rebuild the farm?
The Price of Divided Loyalties
Driving into the once-lively farmhouse yard, David felt disoriented. Too much time had passed since he last visited. The place that once rang with childrenโs laughter now felt abandoned. The fields were brittle and colourless, the droughtโs cruelty etched into every row. No workers came to greet him. The silence was unsettling.
At the farm managerโs house, he learned the manager had left for another job. Confused, he asked after the remaining workers. The managerโs wife explained that many had gone to farms with water still available. Frustration surged through him, mixed with a sense of betrayal. How could they leave so quickly in hard times? Exhaustion made it difficult to contain his emotions.
Misplaced Trust in Mrs Bernette
โThey didnโt even hesitate to leave,โ he muttered. โOne drought season, and theyโre gone.โ
The managerโs wife looked hurt, and guilt pricked him. Her quiet reply cut deeper than he expected.
โSirโฆ you sold the farm. You instructed the new owner to let the workers go. We were shocked that you didnโt tell those who had served you for years. And when the funds for extra harvest labour never came, the crops suffered.โ
She continued gently, โWhat little we harvested couldnโt sustain the workers. The new owner had to leave the rest in the fields, hoping for better days. The underground stream kept a few crops aliveโthatโs why so many wanted to buy this farm. We all assumed thatโs why you sold it.โ
Her words left him reeling. The truth he had never imagined now stood before him.
Matthew 13:24โ26
โThe kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheatโฆ When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.โ
