David's regret

The Cost of Misplaced Trust and Ambition Part 4

The Unraveling

David said, “Mrs Grey, what new owner are you referring to? The farm hasn’t been sold.” “Mr David, how do you explain your absence and Mrs Bernette arriving just after you left if you haven’t sold the farm? She mentioned it herself,” Mrs Grey said. David quickly responded, “You must have misunderstood, Mrs Grey. Mrs Bernette is my boss. After my promotion, she knew I was busy and offered to check on the farm whenever she visited hers. I didn’t sell her the farm.” Mrs Grey paused momentarily before replying, “Mr David, Mrs Bernette is the one who provided work for the employees when the crop funds couldn’t cover their wages.”

The Deceit Revealed

“Her family farm reduced the acreage they were farming because of drying wells, but they still have enough water for the livestock. She felt bad that the workers were not treated well after their years of loyalty. Additionally, she has been offering more money each year to purchase the farm from your father. We all believed she finally made an offer you could not turn down,” Mrs Grey said. “Wait a minute, are you telling me Mrs Bernette, who wanted to buy our farm, is the same Mrs Bernette for whom I work?” David asked.

David’s Realization and Regret

Mrs. Bernette, who sent me on my assignments, checked on the farm and said our crops had failed. That same Mrs. Bernette wanted our farm, David thought. She just gave me my notice from a promising job right after our crops failed. The failure wasn’t due to drought but because we didn’t harvest in time due to a lack of labour. David continued, “The harvest only failed because I didn’t show up and let someone else manage the farm.” He sat down as his knees buckled. “How did I miss this? Why was I so focused on the promotion at a job that wasn’t certain?”
