The tension between generosity and stewardship is central to Christian living. Scripture gives us guiding principles:
- Work as if working for God (Colossians 3:23)
Every act of service, whether appreciated or not, is ultimately unto God. This alignment keeps our motives pure. - Do not give what is precious to dogs (Matthew 7:6)
Jesus warns against wasting holy things on those who will trample them. This denial of wastage is not about withholding kindness, but about recognising when efforts are consistently rejected or abused. - Faith without works is dead (James 2:17)
Generosity must be active, but faith also requires wisdom to ensure works align with God’s will.
๐ Fruits of the Spirit as a Compass
The fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22โ23) are not just virtuesโthey are tools for discernment:
- Love & Kindness โ Push us to give freely, even when inconvenient.
- Patience & Gentleness โ Help us endure when others don’t reciprocate immediately.
- Self-control โ Protects us from overextending and burning out.
- Peace & Joy โ Signal when our giving is Spirit-led, not forced.
- Faithfulness โ Keeps us consistent, but not reckless.
When your giving produces peace and joy, it is fertile soil. When it leaves you drained, resentful, or exploited, it may be stony ground.
๐พ Practical Discernment
Here are some ways to know when to keep sowing or to pause:
- Check the fruit: Is your giving producing growth, gratitude, or transformation?
- Seek confirmation in prayer: God often affirms through inner peace or wise counsel.
- Guard against depletion: Even Jesus withdrew to pray and rest (Luke 5:16).
- Look for reciprocity in spirit, not material: Sometimes the return is encouragement, not resources.
- Trust multiplication: Seeds sown in God’s will always multiplyโeven if unseen at first.
๐ The Balance
Generosity is never wasted when aligned with God’s purpose. But discernment ensures that your “cooking and giving” is Spirit-led, not man-driven. In this way, your seeds will yield harvestsโwhether tenfold, hundredfold, or thousandfoldโbecause they are planted in fertile soil.
