The Burden of Success: A Lawyer’s Moral Dilemma

The Parable of The Lawyer and the Seeds of Justice

A Dream Begins

A young lawyer longed to defend the voiceless.
He wanted justice for people with low incomes, not wealth from corporations.
However, starting a firm required resources he did not have.

The Tempting Offer

Soon, wealthy investors approached him.
They promised to fund half the cost of his new firm.
In return, he would draft contracts whenever they were required.
Although reluctant, he accepted, believing he could balance their demands.

Early Success

The firm opened quickly because the investors had real estate connections.
Renovations were swift, staff were hired, and the office thrived.
Soon, laid-off workers came seeking justice.
The lawyer uncovered loopholes and secured generous settlements.
Justice was served, and his heart rejoiced.

The Hidden Cost

Nevertheless, the investors soon called in their favour.
They asked for airtight contracts that allowed dismissals without consequence.
Reluctantly, the lawyer complied, believing he could still help others.
Yet his skill became a weapon in the hands of the powerful.

Justice Undone

Later, more workers arrived with contracts he had written.
Unfortunately, those contracts were flawless, leaving no loopholes to exploit.
Therefore, he could not help them, despite his desire.
His own hands had built the walls that trapped them.

The Burden of Success

Financially, the firm thrived.
However, morally, the lawyer was burdened.
For every step forward, he was dragged five steps back.
He realised too late that compromise had poisoned his foundation.
