The Purpose of Planning Part 3

The Moral of The Story

Planning is an activity that alleviates stress and uncertainty rather than causing it, making it beautiful. However, when people don’t fully grasp its purpose, it can be a source of anxiety and anguish. Despair sets in when things don’t go according to plan. Realistically, the belief that planning our lives or activities ensures everything will go according to plan is overly optimistic. The purpose of planning is to help us understand what is essential in life and to strive for what we desire. It outlines the destination and a potential route to reach it.

Change The Method, Not the Goal

To keep moving forward, we should focus on the destination as much as the path we take. If the road to our destination is inaccessible, we may need to find an alternate route. Sometimes, the alternative route might necessitate retracing our steps. It may take longer than anticipated, but it is preferable to giving up on our goal or mentally shutting down while sitting in traffic. Instead, we could devote our energy to finding a way out of the situation and pushing ahead. Be patient when things are not going according to plan. Do not be afraid to break your plans into smaller goals that allow you to reconsider your options (regroup) after each component.

How Can We Keep Moving Forward?

Acknowledging that plans may fail can keep our minds open to other possibilities. When we find ourselves in a situation where we are passing by unfamiliar routes, our curiosity is piqued. We may wonder where they will lead us. We may also familiarize ourselves with as many potential routes as possible beforehand. It is preferable to weigh our options against what is accessible in ideal circumstances. In addition, we consider what may be available if circumstances improve or deteriorate beyond what we expected. As a result, the plan is both set and flexible. We can efficiently cope with the predicted and adapt to the unexpected.

In Conclusion

Planning is the art of discovering magic in our journey. It is not merely a set of rigid plans we must follow even when life’s circumstances change. Plans are based on knowledge when we set our goals, not the circumstances we will encounter while pursuing them. Changes cannot be ignored without compromising our goals.

We aim to head towards our destination, but sometimes unseen roadblocks throw us off our path and lead us to unanticipated opportunities. Sometimes, detours offer better options even without roadblocks, taking us on unexpected adventures. We keep our eyes ahead but watch for the fork in the road. If the detour offers better returns, take it as a blessing. Be open to better alternatives that provide more significant long-term benefits while staying committed to the outcome.

Redirection is not giving up, nor is it rejection. It is a hidden opportunity only visible to those who are prepared, willing, and capable at the right time and place. These factors are a product of good planning, but chance may add a bonus to our journey. Effective planning is a balancing act.
